First pitch

Sadaharu Oh wasn’t known for his pitching, but no better way to start the WBC Championship Round.

Is there room for two Captain Americas? Ryan Braun, good on you!

Too bad that fundamental mistakes by American-born Denorfia and Rizzo allowed Puerto Rico to bat around the order and climb past Italy here in the bottom of the 8th.

To my ears there wasn’t a trace of sarcasm

As Puerto Rico second baseman Irving Falu grounded out in the 3rd inning against Team USA, MLB Network announcer Matt Vasgersian coined a nickname:

"And there’s a ground ball to Captain America himself, David Wright."

UPDATE from bottom of the inning:

Yup, this is definitely Wright’s nickname for the rest of the tournament.

Vasgersian just called him “Captain America” as he walked to the batter’s box.

“There’s no truth to the rumor that after these games are over, Larry Bowa goes to a local Chucky Cheese’s and heckles the kids playing Whack-a-Mole.” Matt Vasgersian, MLB Network announcer on Team USA bench coach Larry Bowa, 67.

Surprisingly robust applause as Willie Bloomquist enters the game. My guess: Canadian fans are clapping, because they think Bloomquist is Canadian, because they’ve never heard of him.

MLB Network really should update the “Most Players in WBC” graphic as teams are eliminated from the WBC.

Last I checked, the Venezuelan players aren’t “in” anything at this point ( except maybe the customs line getting back from Puerto Rico).
